Pyrenees Trips

This is the page for enquiring or completing your booking reservations for any of our trips to the Pyrenees. These are planned for the August time of the year.

Introduction
A word of warning about cycling in the Pyrenees. It is spectacular and great fun but there are no flat roads. Lots of Mountains and well, lots more Mountains!  The average gradients are between 4% and 8%, often some 10%, but sections of 12-14 in places on the extreme routes. They do have some e-bikes for rent! Recommend a bottom gear of at least 34×34, a 34×36 would be better.

The default dates for these reservations are from Sat 16th to Sat 23rd August. However, you can arrive a day early or depart a day later if you wish.

Location and Hotels:
The location is the well known Luchon (or more fully Bangers-de-Luchon). There are a few Hotels here and lots of apartments as an alternative. It is a Winter ski resort, so the accommodation choices reflect that.  Our favourite is the Hotel Castel d’Alti and it is centrally placed 4* Hotel. It has an indoor pool, gym, comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts and unusually an underground secure parking! All of what you would expect from a Hotel of this standard. Rooms for the week are from €973 single and €1113 shared. However, feel free to select your own accommodation and just turn up for the bike rides. There will be a schedule released.

Airport Transfers
The closest large airport is Toulouse-Blagnac (TLS).  This is 112km from Luchon and takes 1.5-2 hrs by car. Others are Pau-Pyrenees (PUF), 105km, 2hrs by car. Lourdes/Tarbes-Pyrenees (LDE) 65km, 1.5 hrs by car. Biarritz and Carcassonne both 2.5 hrs by car.

Rental Bikes?
Unlike Mallorca, there aren’t as many bike shops or choices of bikes, so expect to pay a little bit more for bike rentals. If we have a large enough group booking together, we can arrange to bring bikes to Luchon and have a support vehicle on hand each day

Itinerary
We will have 1 or 2 ride groups each day, depending on the route and plan on a very easy day every 3 or 4 days. It is demanding terrain, so you will get tired if you don’t pace yourself appropriately! So many legendary Cols to climb! Col de Superbagneres, Col de Portillon, Col de Peyresourde, Port de Bales, Peyragudes, Col d’Azet (Col de Val Louron-Azet), Col d’Aspin. Slightly further out, Pla d’Adet, Cap de Long, Col du Tourmalet, Col de Portet, Hourquette d’Anzican. Even further out, best with 3 or 4 days in Argeles-Gazost are Col de Soulor, Col de Spandelles, Col des Borderes, Col d’Aubisque, Hautacam, Luz Ardiden
